Smart Materials for Architecture Research Lab

    The Smart Material for Architectural Research Lab (SMARL), established in 2022 and directed by Dr. Gang Tan, a distinguished Qiushi Chair Professor at the College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Zhejiang University, is dedicated to addressing the demands of decarbonization technologies. SMARL introduces pioneering concepts and methodologies while focusing on the pivotal goal of advanced smart building materials and key technologies for next generation of green buildings. Comprising a team of adept and diverse researchers spanning disciplines such as chemistry, mechanics, optics, material science, architecture, thermophysics, energy engineering, artificial intelligence, and more, SMARL is dedicated to innovative scientific research in the realm of smart building materials and smart green building technologies, and the research direction primarily centers around tackling fundamental multi-field coupling problems encompassing forces, heat, light, and electricity, involving the design of 1) spectral modulation smart materials, 2) photovoltaic conversion smart materials, 3) high-efficiency thermal insulation materials, and 4) conductive fibrous materials for personalized thermal management.
